What It's Like to Have a Campus Job
ONU has multiple opportunities for campus jobs. Many of which can pertain to a specific major like being a TA for a class or a tutor, but others are open to anyone, like working in the career center. While working a campus job, students are typically only allowed to work 20 hours a week. I was told that you can hold up to three campus jobs, but I am not 100% certain about that. Campus jobs are a great way for a student to get involved on campus while making a little money. They typically pay about minimum wage, but they give you work experience, connections on campus and can even help you decide what you might want to do after graduation.
As a commuter, I began my campus job this past summer.
Having a job on campus in the summer, especially as an upcoming freshman, was
honestly one of my favorite things I did. I was able to explore our campus
while there were not very many students around. I learned where all the
buildings were, like where the controller’s office, the technology building and
the print shop were. I was also able to meet a lot of faculty and staff. Now, I
was only able to do this because I live so close, but it was a fun experience.
During the semester, I work about ten hours a week, and most
jobs are flexible with scheduling. I can come in for an hour before class and
come back after to work another if I want to. Also, if I need to work on a
group project or want to attend a campus event, I can ask to move my hours a
little earlier or later.
I currently work in the Engineering Dean’s Office, and it is
super fun. Engineering is one of the nicest buildings on campus, so it is cool
to be able to explore all the study rooms and see all the new things they are
working on. In the office, I will help run errands or do random tasks, but my
main job is to help with capstones. In engineering, their capstones are
basically building something; to do that, they need to buy materials. This is
where I come in. I order all their materials and keep track of their budgets.
Most of the organization is set up for me; I just input how much money is spent
and ensure I order things to the correct address.
If you are thinking of getting a campus job, I recommend it.
It is tons of fun, and I get to do things I never thought I would. As a public
relations major, budgeting is not something I thought I would enjoy, but I do,
especially when I get to go online shopping.

ReplyDeleteWe always need student workers! I worked in the greenhouse for a little bit and it was a blast! I definitely did not do it for money, though. The hours and the pay are often not great incentives, but that's not necessarily what they're for, I suppose.

I also didn't know that you started working your job before classes started, that's super cool! That's also nice that you got a feel for campus before all of the students moved in.
