Where Would You Put Your YouTube Ad?

There are so many different options to places ads on YouTube. Before reading this chapter I did not realize how many ads I was seeing every time I watched YouTube video. From provide ads, middle of the video ads, the video being sponsored, to picture ads in my video feeds, it is no wonder that YouTube gains about 36.1 billion in advertisement revenue.

YouTube is the second most popular social media platform seeing about 2.53 billion users per year. Video is becoming the most consumed form of content, 81% of businesses using video content. Also 93% of businesses report that they have gained a new customer after publishing a video. This makes YouTube a prime place for businesses and consumers.

There are many ad formats on YouTube, each having its own purpose. One advertisement format that I see often are Skippable video ads. These ads are perfect for brands who want to make an impression withing the first few seconds, however this format allows users to skip the ad if they are not interested. I see this ad formatted used a lot for movie ads and other more informational ads where users would be less engaged if they watched the whole thing, but for users interested gives them an option to skip the advertisement.

Another format I often see are mid-roll ads. These advertisements can be added to a video manually or automatically. This allows video creators to place advertisements strategically within the video. Many creators use this method to add suspense to their videos or as transitions to break up content

One last format is advertisements placed outside of the video player. These advertisements cannot be controlled by creators and are placed with the goal to gain a viewer’s attention while they are looking for other content to watch.

While these are just a few advertisement formats on YouTube they are the ones that stuck out to me. There are many ways that these formats can be combined to make back-to-back ads called ad pods and or can be made into non-skippable advertisements. Each format has its own purpose in a marketing campaign. Some ads can inform customers and others can further reach or clicks. When creating an advertising strategy, it is important to choose the format that best satisfies the advertisement goal
